Terrorism: Root Causes There is not one commonly used definition for terrorism. Within the US government, each agency has its own definition, and around the world there are countless others. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) defines terrorism as â€Å"the unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives.† (Federal Bureau of investigation 2016) This definition does a good job of using language that is all encompassing of the different types of terrorism that exist. Additionally, this definition is favorable because it makes mention of violence against civilians, not just the government.†¦show more content†¦Entire states and cultures can be excluded based on the hegemonic group’s interest in them. For example, Saudi Arabia, a country who has a rocky past in their religious severity, is included in economic a ctivities because they have a natural resource needed by the West, whereas other Middle Eastern countries such as Iraq, have maintained an excluded status. Flint argues that the systematic inclusion and exclusion creates tension among groups of people. The system of inclusion and exclusion creates animosity which can lead to civil unrest in cases where civilians want to have better economic opportunities. Leading to violent acts to influence the government to make changes. Although an older example, the Russian revolution comes to mind. While the rest of the western world was developing economically and standards of living were improving, Russia was not. So, the people revolted in an attempt to gain a better government system. Animosity from the system of inclusion and exclusion can also be played out in another way, religious terrorism. The west, or Christian majority countries, have become the target of Islamic extremists because they are the people responsible for their excluded status.
